National IP Core from Electra IC

  • National IP Core from Electra IC-ElectraIC
While the products become national, the sub-components must also go through the same process. The core developed nationally by the ElectraIC company draws attention to a reality that must not be overlooked. This core is a piece of hardware and allows different devices in avionic electronic products using MIL-STD-1553B protocol to communicate with each other.

C4Defence: What is this product, what does it perform, what does it do?

Electra IC founding partner Ateş Berna: First of all, “IP Core”: IP consists of the capitals of the words Intellectual Property, so it means “Intellectual Property”. IP core, on the other hand, is a complex functional electronic circuit block licensed by the original designer to other companies for use. It usually is a part of another processor or other complex integrated circuits. In brief, IP core is not software, but hardware.

MIL-STD-1553B standard, on the other hand, is a communication standard that allows the electronic devices used in avionic products to communicate with each other. Many companies in Turkey as well as worldwide allow communication of different devices with each other by using this communication standard in the products developed by them.

The MIL-STD-1553B IP core developed by us is an IP core that meets the MIL-STD-1553B standard and has single or multiple interfaces for the host processor. This DO-254 compliant IP core can function as Bus Controller (BC), two separate Remote Terminals (RT) and Bus Monitor (BM) at the same time.

In other words, it is our business to design digital microchips. Just like the software developers, we write codes, too; but the codes written by us turn into electronic circuit elements, i.e., physical elements such as and or flip flop, in the computer-aided design environment.

C4Defence: What was your reason to develop this product?

Ateş Berna: Many defense industry companies in Turkey are using this protocol in their products. And we have had the chance to work on projects using the MIL-STD-1553B protocol since 2012. We have very crucial knowledge and experience in relation with the MIL-STD-1553B protocol in terms of not only design but also verification. We developed this communication protocol in a multifunctional manner through the project started by us together with a customer in 2018 and now we have an IP Core that can be used by everyone. Now the companies in Turkey do not have to import this product, they can provide it from us as a domestic and national product. We are starting the trial runs with some of them.

C4Defence: Was the product developed by the ElectraIC engineers? Is it completely domestic?

Ateş Berna: Yes. Completely domestic. It was developed in line with the requirements of one of our customers. Verifications for it were performed thoroughly in detail in computer environment and tests were performed in laboratory environment by using a bus tester provided from abroad. Our customer has performed the tests in RT mode and accepted it. The tests in BC and BM modes are continuing by integrating it to the products of our customer.

C4Defence: How long did it take you to develop the product? Is it ready for sale?

Ateş Berna: Product development R&D process was completed in 12 months. The development process took a long time since it took place according to the DO-254 processes. We have started to announce the product on our website and social media channels starting from October 20.

C4Defence: Will you be able to produce similar products for all customers requesting them?

Ateş Berna: Yes, of course. Our core business is to design such complex and critical electronic components required by our customers from scratch. We are negotiating with some companies for development of other similar avionic protocols. In addition, since we know how the DO-254 processes are applied, we not only develop IP core and also guarantee to provide any documentation package for any possible DO-254 certification process of this product developed by us.

C4Defence: What are the other companies, in Turkey and abroad, involved in IP Core development projects jointly with ElectraIC?

Ateş Berna: We had VIP and IP development projects with ASELSAN and Roketsan in Turkey. We continue to shape new IP core development projects with other companies as well. We have provided DO-254 consulting services to Northrop Grumman Litef Company in Germany on DAL-C and DAL-B levels. And we have an ongoing ASIC project with IMEC firm, and we are verifying the microchip that is developed.

Our aim is to increase the number of the firms working with us and the projects in Turkey and abroad. Therefore, we participated in the DVCon Europe on October 29-30, 2019. We had a booth there. We will also have a booth in the Embedded World Fair, one of the most important fairs in the world for embedded systems that will be organized in Germany on February 25-27, 2020.

C4Defence: What does success of MIL-STD-1553B IP mean for ElectraIC and for our country?

Ateş Berna: MIL-STD-1553B is a critical component used in many projects in our country. The Presidency of Defense Industry also has the objective of producing the components that are considered nationally critical as original and domestic ones. And the project realized by us here is a successful example that hit the nail on the head. Therefore, we think that our statesmen should definitely develop the projects that will pave the way for the microelectronics companies that are capable of developing high-tech sub-components like us. Small-scale companies like us have to survive by moving on from one project to another. The large companies performing such projects with small companies usually request to retain all the IP rights. However, in this manner, it becomes difficult for service provider companies like us to have products and to survive. We are fortunate about that, since we have the exclusive sales rights of the MIL-STD-1553B IP Core, although we do not have the IP rights. In other words, only ElectraIC can sell this product in Turkey and worldwide.  This is a very important development. When there are more of these developments, we will see many high-tech IP cores developed in Turkey. Now, our companies such as TUSAŞ, ASELSAN, ROKETSAN and STM need to access the league of giants in the world, just like Boeing, Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman. When doing this, they also need subcontractors that are very powerful and able to develop critical technologies.
